Before You Book That Facial Trial, Read This First!

You’ve seen the ads – “First trial only RM39!” “Get glowing skin instantly!”

So when I saw one for RM69, I thought, why not? A little pampering never hurt anyone.

The facial itself was fine, but what came next wasn’t.

As soon as it ended, the sales advisor invited me to “discuss” my skin condition and that’s when things took a turn.

Suddenly, I was being told how terrible my skin was, and that it could “only” be saved by their products. The solution? A RM5,000 package, conveniently payable in instalments.

When I said I wasn’t ready for that kind of commitment, they got defensive. I even tried to deflect politely, saying big spendings like that are something I’d discuss with my husband which seemed to irritate them even more.

That was my red flag moment. I smiled, said “no, thank you,” and walked out before the conversation went any further.

And that’s when it hit me, so many of us probably fall into the same trap.

What starts as a “self-care treat” can easily turn into a high-pressure sales pitch that preys on our insecurities.

If you’re planning to try one of these “first trial” facials in Malaysia, here’s how to do it safely, without getting scammed or guilt-tripped.

1. Don’t get trapped by the trial tactic

These “first trial” facials are loss leaders, their goal isn’t to make you pay RM39, but to convert you into a big-spending customer.

The treatments may be genuine, but the sales pitch that follows can be aggressive.

If the consultant keeps pushing even after you say no, that’s a red flag. A reputable spa knows that good results speak louder than pressure.

2. Keep your phone and purse with you

Never leave your belongings unattended during treatments. Some places ask you to “keep your bag outside,” but in this time of face recognition and tap-to-pay, it’s safer to have your phone and wallet within sight.

3. Disable biometrics before your appointment

It sounds paranoid, but it’s smart. Turn off Face ID, fingerprint unlock, or payment shortcuts on your phone before your facial.

While most salons are honest, you can’t risk unauthorised access when your eyes are closed and your device is just a tap away.

4. Ask about what’s included in detail

Before you even sit down, ask:

  • What exactly is included in the trial?
  • Are there hidden charges for “optional upgrades”?
  • Will they be taking photos or using any devices during the session?

Having this clarity sets the tone – you’re not an easy target.

5. Bring a friend (or pretend you have one waiting)

If you’re nervous about being pressured, go with a friend.

Or at least mention that someone’s waiting for you outside, it subtly signals you won’t be staying long for upselling “consultations.”

6. Do a quick background check

Check their Google reviews, TikTok, and Facebook comments. Look for patterns!

If multiple people mention pushy sales tactics, fake discounts, or poor hygiene, skip it.

7. Don’t be swayed by instalment talk

Just because something can be paid in instalments doesn’t make it affordable.

Think of it this way, RM2000 split over six months is still RM2000.

If they try to convince you to “lock in a deal today,” politely decline. You’re not being rude, its called financially responsible.

The Only Commitment You Need Is to Yourself

At the end of the day, if anything feels off like the staff’s tone, the environment, or the hard-sell energy, trust your instincts.

There are plenty of honest, reputable facial centres that won’t pressure you into a long-term commitment.

At the end of the day, your skin and your money deserve respect.

A good facial should make you feel relaxed and pampered, not anxious about your bank balance.
