Ever Heard of “Moon Face”? Here’s What It Actually Means

Last weekend, I got ready to meet my friends. Hair? Done. Outfit? Super on point. Makeup? Blended, glowing, everything sitting right.

I left the house feeling like, okay… this is a good day.

Then the photos came in and suddenly… my face looked rounder. Puffier. Almost like someone had slightly inflated it overnight. I stared at it longer than I should have and just felt like a balloon, when truth is, I had my “moon face” on.

What is “moon face,” actually? Well….“moon face” is when your face looks noticeably rounder, puffier, or swollen, especially around the cheeks and jawline.

It can come and go where some days you look like yourself… other days, your face just feels fuller. Here’s the important part: It’s often not fat but a blend of water retention, hormones, or inflammation.

The Reasons Behind Your “Moon Face”

Menstruation period cycle of monthly

1. Cortisol (a.k.a. Your Stress Hormone): When you’re stressed = whether it’s work, kids, lack of sleep, or just life in general, your body produces more cortisol.

And cortisol does two things:

  • Encourages water retention
  • Redistributes fat (especially to the face)

That’s why during stressful periods, your face can suddenly look puffier… even if nothing else has changed.

2. Your Menstrual Cycle: In the days leading up to your period:

  • Oestrogen and progesterone fluctuate
  • Your body holds onto more water
  • Your face (and body) can feel bloated

So if you’ve ever thought, “Why do I look so different this week?”, check your cycle. It’s usually not a coincidence.

3. Poor Sleep (Yes, Even Just One Bad Night): One late night. That’s all it takes especially as you wave goodbye to your teenage years.

When you don’t sleep well, fluid doesn’t drain properly, blood circulation slows down and your face holds onto excess water

4. Salt, Sugar, and Processed Foods: That “just one” salty meal? For some it can show up more than others.

High sodium and sugar intake can cause your body to retain water or lead to temporary facial swelling.

5. Inflammation: Other times, your body may be reacting to certain foods, alcohol or even skincare products.

So… What Can You Actually Do About It?

If your face suddenly looks puffier than usual, don’t panic, it’s often temporary and manageable.

Start by supporting your body, not restricting it: drink more water, go easy on salty foods (especially at night), and include potassium-rich foods like bananas or leafy greens to help balance fluids.

Next, prioritise better sleep, even small changes like sleeping 30 minutes earlier or reducing screen time can make a visible difference.

For quick results, try gentle lymphatic drainage, think light facial massage, gua sha, or even using your hands while applying skincare to help move excess fluid.

At the same time, manage stress in small ways, because high cortisol can trigger water retention.

Take a short walk or even 10 minutes away from your phone, yes it actually helps.

Lastly, track your patterns instead of spiralling, if it happens before your period, after salty meals, or poor sleep, it’s your body responding, not something permanent.

And most importantly, not every “puffy face day” needs fixing, sometimes, it’s just your body doing its thing.
